Covering an area of 1343.5 km2, Changping is located at the northwest of Beijing where Yan Mountain and the branch of Taihang Mountain meet and has a population of 1.83 million. The total length of its borderline is 261.5km. Its terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. It leans against Jundu Mountain in the North and overlooks Beijing city in the south. The altitude of mountains which account for 60% of the region is 800-1000m and of plains which account for 40% of the region is 30-100m. It has 2 national forest parks and is the origin of Beijing’s mother river--Wenyu River.
Changping has a long history and rich culture. It has been over 2,000 years since Changping County was set in the Han Dynasty. The Ming Tombs and the Juyongguan Great Wall within its domain are on the list of Directory of World Cultural Heritage. Xiaotangshan is a famous hot spring tourism resort.
There are major higher educational and research institutions in Changping, including 14 universities and their branch campuses, 18 national research institutions where nearly 20,000 researchers make their contributions.
Changping is an important part of the national science park--Zhongguancun National Self-innovation Demonstration Core Area. Now its development is mainly driven by high-tech industries. It has gradually formed three specialty industries (energy technology, high-end manufacturing and biological medicine) and is home to the research, development and sales center of multiple Fortune Global 500 companies like CNPC, SINOPEC, and China Mobile.
Being the major producing area of apple and strawberry in Beijing, Changping produces 20 million kilograms high quality apples and 10 million kilograms strawberries. In Feb. 2012, The 7th World Strawberry Conference is held in Changping.
Being an active player in foreign exchange and cooperation, Changping now has established friendly relations with 10 cities including Oakland of California of America, Nuremberg of German, and Dobong District of Seoul. The exchange covers economy, education, science and technology, sport and culture.
Since the reform and opening up, Changping has achieved a healthy and sustainable development, gained overall economic strength, advanced urbanization process, and improved people’s living standard. It has successively got titles of “City with Entrepreneurship”, “National Science and Technology Progress Demonstration Area”, “Active District on Legal Education” (five years in a row), “Model District on Double Support” (seven years in a row). In 2012, its GDP reached 50 billion Yuan; the total output value of above-scale industries exceeded 100 billion Yuan; public revenue reached 5.22 billion Yuan; and urban per capita disposable income and rural per capita net income respectively reached 29,938 Yuan and 14,967 Yuan.
Demographic
Permanent Resident Population
In 2012, there are 1.83 million permanent residents in Changping, of which floating population is 0.957 million, accounting for 52.3% of the total. There are 66,300 ethnic minorities, accounting for 3.99% of the total. The major ethnic minorities are Manchu, the Hui Nationality and the Mongol Nationality. Most of them are in Dongxiaokou Town, Huilongguan Town, Beiqijia Town, and North City Street.
Registered Population
In 2012, the registered population of Changping is 0.561 million, of which agricultural population is 198,000, accounting for 35.3% of the total.
Road Traffic
Changping is located at the northwest of Beijing. It is adjacent to the Olympic Village to the south. The district center is only 33 km away from downtown. A traffic network with four highways, five rail transits, and numerous national roads and provincial roads has been initially completed to connect with adjacent areas.
